It’s time to address the issue that is at the core of our faith which is love. Christ calls us to love our enemies. John says love one another as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it. God loved the world so much he gave his only son. The question begs a response. A man is called to love his wife like he loves his own body.

You might be asking, “What’s the problem?” Just love everybody and you’ll be covered.

The bible tells us in Deuteronomy 6:  And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

We can show we love God by keeping his commandments.

Deuteronomy 6:

25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.

God’s promise in Deuteronomy 7:

Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

10 And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.

A thousand generations of benefit from loving God. Is that awesome or what?

In Hebrews we find: 12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

And also: 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

We are called to love the brethren in 1 John:

14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

And in 1 John 4:

11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

The bible holds a warning against those who would love themselves in 1 Timothy:

3 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

So those who despise or hate those who are good cause the perilous times in these last days.

As Christians we are held to a higher standard. In the old testament it says Thou shalt not kill but Jesus said in Matthew:

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Just hating someone makes you a murderer.

We can show love for our enemies by:

31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

For in Luke 6 it goes on to say:

32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.

33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.

34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

We will be held accountable:

35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

And in Romans it says:

Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
