Suspended Animation

James 1:19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

In the heat of the moment we say things that are hurtful. Words cannot be taken back. They are like murder to the inner man. Once you have said something you regret there’s no undoing what you have done. When someone is murdered there is no bringing them back.

If we could only take the advice of James and keep a slow tongue.

James 3:3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

When it comes to our tongues it would be better if they could be held in suspended animation than to hurt others.
