Before I even started school my mom taught me about the “attitude of prayer”. She would say, “Kneel by your bed, put your hands together, bow your head, and repeat after me: Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the LORD my soul to keep, if I should die before I wake, I pray the LORD my soul to take. Bless Mommy and Daddy, …long list of names of sisters, brothers, grandparents, etc. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

I remember thinking at the time. “What do you mean, die before I wake?” It was a little scary to me but I wanted so bad to please my mom that I would pray it just the way she said.

Kneeling is a symbol of humility. God humbled himself.

Psalm 95:6-8 Come, let us bow down in worship,
    let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,[a]
    as you did that day at Massah[b] in the wilderness,

In Hebrew Meribah means “place of strife.” Massah means “testing or temptation”.

A mindset is an attitude.

Philippians 2:3-10 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature[a] God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
    by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
        even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
    and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
    in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

God’s attitude is humble. We should take on his attitude.

James 4:6-10But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud
    but shows favor to the humble.”[a]

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
