Heavenly Things

John 3:9-13 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony. 12 If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.

We are continuing with this review of the key theme which is found at the beginning of this gospel in John 1:16
16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.

We should all realize what a Christian is meant to be in this life.

We have been analyzing ourselves to determine if we do indeed have this life in us and if we have received of His fullness. We must guard against the problem of allowing our intellect to limit Scripture to our own human understanding.

Do you know that you have received of this fullness?

Because we are not sufficiently child-like, not sufficiently simple, our intellect creeps in and causes problems. Luke 18:15-17 15 And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. 16 But Jesus called for them, saying, “Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”

The whole object of studying the bible is to know Him more and more and for us to realize our own position in Christ, that we might live this Christian life in His fullness.

There are many difficulties that lie in the way of us receiving of His fullness more and more.

Nicodemus was a different type from the others we have studied before because he is a part of the religious elite. He is a ruler, a leader of the Jews and yet he was wrong. Even though he was a master, a teacher in Israel. He was a very able man. He was a great man in many ways. He was free from prejudices. He didn’t come to Jesus asking for “signs” or questioning his “authority.” He came to learn of Him, to put forth questions he had about his religion.

Nicodemus knew that Jesus was sent from God. He saw the real meaning of the miracles Jesus did. He addresses Jesus as Rabbi even though Jesus is just a carpenter. He assents to His position. He knows that Jesus was sent from God. But He is feeling convicted by the fact that Jesus obviously has something that he lacks and he comes seeking to know what it is that makes Him different. He wasn’t self-satisfied like the other Pharisees.

Are you self-satisfied? Do you hunger and thirst after righteousness? Is there a longing to know Him more and more?

There is no hope in the Christian life if we are not aware of our need for Him. Are we always comparing ourselves to others in the world and thanking God we are not like them? Or are we humble like Nicodemus and come looking at the perfection of God and seeing our own unworthiness?

The truth is Nicodemus didn’t see Jesus as LORD. That was his great mistake. He saw Him more as an equal not as a Savior. He called Him Rabbi or teacher. He too was a teacher.

Matthew 5:3
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Nicodemus is a very wise man and he acts on what he feels. Do we follow through seeking truth when we’ve been convicted? Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

Joy to the World Sunday, Dec 16 2018

Joy to the world
Joy to the world, the Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing

Joy to the world
Joy to the World, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

Joy to the world, now we sing
Let the earth receive her king
Joy to the world, now we sing
Let the angel voices ring
Joy to the world, now we sing
Let men their songs employ
Joy to the world, now we sing
Repeat the sounding joy

Oh oh
He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The light of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders, wonders, of His love
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Joy to the world, now we sing
Let the earth receive her king
Joy to the world, now we sing
Let the angel voices ring.

Come Back to the LORD-Day 19 Monday, Apr 9 2018

Today’s Scripture is found in the book of Psalms, chapter 119, verses 145-152:

Qoph.

145 I cried with all my heart; answer me, O Lord!
I will observe Your statutes.
146 I cried to You; save me
And I shall keep Your testimonies.
147 I [bn]rise before dawn and cry for help;
I [bo]wait for Your words.
148 My eyes anticipate the night watches,
That I may meditate on Your [bp]word.
149 Hear my voice according to Your lovingkindness;
Revive me, O Lord, according to Your ordinances.
150 Those who follow after wickedness draw near;
They are far from Your law.
151 You are near, O Lord,
And all Your commandments are truth.
152 Of old I have known from Your testimonies
That You have founded them forever.

For we know Isaiah 26:8-10:

Indeed, while following the way of Your judgments, O Lord,
We have waited for You eagerly;
Your name, even Your memory, is the desire of our souls.
At night [a]my soul longs for You,
Indeed, [b]my spirit within me seeks You diligently;
For when the earth [c]experiences Your judgments
The inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.
10 Though the wicked is shown favor,
He does not learn righteousness;
He deals unjustly in the land of uprightness,
And does not perceive the majesty of the Lord.

Come Back to the LORD-Day 18 Sunday, Apr 8 2018

Today’s Scripture is at Psalms 119:137-145

Tsadhe.

137 Righteous are You, O Lord,
And upright are Your judgments.
138 You have commanded Your testimonies in righteousness
And exceeding faithfulness.
139 My zeal has [a]consumed me,
Because my adversaries have forgotten Your words.
140 Your [b]word is very [c]pure,
Therefore Your servant loves it.
141 I am small and despised,
Yet I do not forget Your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
And Your law is truth.
143 Trouble and anguish have [d]come upon me,
Yet Your commandments are my delight.
144 Your testimonies are righteous forever;
Give me understanding that I may live.

For we know John 2:17 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”

Come Back to the LORD-Day 13 Tuesday, Apr 3 2018

Today’s Scripture is Psalms119:97-104

Mem.

97 O how I love Your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
98 Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies,
For they are ever [a]mine.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
For Your testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the aged,
Because I have observed Your precepts.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not turned aside from Your ordinances,
For You Yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are Your [b]words to my [c]taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 From Your precepts I get understanding;
Therefore I hate every false way.

For we know Psalms 25:4-5

Make me know Your ways, O Lord;
Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
For You I wait all the day.

Come Back to the LORD-Day 9 Friday, Mar 30 2018

The Scripture for today can be found in the book of Psalms chapter 119 verses 65-72:

Teth.

65 You have dealt well with Your servant,
O Lord, according to Your word.
66 Teach me good [a]discernment and knowledge,
For I believe in Your commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.
68 You are good and do good;
Teach me Your statutes.
69 The arrogant [b]have forged a lie against me;
With all my heart I will observe Your precepts.
70 Their heart is [c]covered with fat,
But I delight in Your law.
71 It is good for me that I was afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.
72 The law of Your mouth is better to me
Than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

There are benefits in coming back to the LORD. He teaches us directly from His Word. His Word is applicable to all people in all times in all places in all circumstances.

For we know Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.

Come Back to the Lord-Day 8 Thursday, Mar 29 2018

The Scripture we are studying today can be found in the book of Psalms chapter 119: 57-64

Psalm 119:57-64 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Heth.

57 The Lord is my portion;
I have [a]promised to keep Your words.
58 I sought Your favor with all my heart;
Be gracious to me according to Your [b]word.
59 I considered my ways
And turned my feet to Your testimonies.
60 I hastened and did not delay
To keep Your commandments.
61 The cords of the wicked have encircled me,
But I have not forgotten Your law.
62 At midnight I shall rise to give thanks to You
Because of Your righteous ordinances.
63 I am a companion of all those who [c]fear You,
And of those who keep Your precepts.
64 The earth is full of Your lovingkindness, O Lord;
Teach me Your statutes.

For we know:

Hebrews 1:1-3 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
God’s Final Word in His Son

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, [a]in these last days has spoken to us [b]in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the [c]world. [d]And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and [e]upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

The Lord is our portion. All who seek Him shall not be dismayed.

God’s Hiding Place Friday, Sep 22 2017

Job 22:14 ‘Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see;
He walks on the [a]vault of heaven.’

The LORD inhabits the praises of His people.

50 “Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the nations,
And I will sing praises to Your name.

Psalm 108:2-4King James Version (KJV)

Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.

I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations.

For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reaches unto the clouds.

Psalm 91 He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Deuteronomy 4:29 But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30 When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the Lord your God and obey him.

1 Chronicles 16:9-11New International Version (NIV)

Sing to him, sing praise to him;
    tell of all his wonderful acts.
10 Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
11 Look to the Lord and his strength;
    seek his face always.

1 Chronicles 22:18-19New International Version (NIV)

18 He said to them, “Is not the Lord your God with you? And has he not granted you rest on every side? For he has given the inhabitants of the land into my hands, and the land is subject to the Lord and to his people. 19 Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God. Begin to build the sanctuary of the Lord God, so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the sacred articles belonging to God into the temple that will be built for the Name of the Lord.”

Psalm 27:7-9New International Version (NIV)

Hear my voice when I call, Lord;
    be merciful to me and answer me.
My heart says of you, “Seek his face!”
    Your face, Lord, I will seek.
Do not hide your face from me,
    do not turn your servant away in anger;
    you have been my helper.
Do not reject me or forsake me,
    God my Savior.

When we worship God it ushers in His Holy Spirit. He is not hiding. It says that those who seek Him will find Him.

Manna Tuesday, Jul 4 2017

Ice wings feathered across the morning light.

Only one last chance to see the right.

By God’s grace we’ll fly beyond the veil,

And see the mist of morning’s descending quail.

God’s provision, manna to the soul.

And meat within the vision of the bowl.

Let us honor God our Lord true.

His lessons learned on cue.

And let not our rapture dim

The love of God within.

For by His grace we honor Him.

Collide our questions in His view

As His love we renew.

Each new day our hearts ascend

To the Lord; our forever friend.

God’s Way Saturday, May 20 2017

Psalm 1:1Blessed is the one
    who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
    or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
    which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

God’s Way is right.
